Glean alternatives for governed enterprise search
Enterprise search and AI assistants help people find answers across company knowledge. This page explains what to compare when you evaluate options, including a privately deployed alternative.
What enterprise search needs to do
Good enterprise search finds the right answer across many systems and shows where it came from. It respects who is allowed to see what, and it keeps working as content changes.
AI assistants add direct answers and automation on top. That raises the importance of permissions, citations and audit.
What to compare

| Citations | Citations on every response. | Confirm against the vendor’s current documentation. |
| Audit | Every query, action and approval logged. | Confirm against the vendor’s current documentation. |
| Integrations | Slack, Microsoft Teams, Salesforce, Jira, Confluence, Zendesk, Snowflake, SAP, Google Drive, SharePoint and more. | Confirm against the vendor’s current documentation. |

| Workflows | Agents with approval gates and a full trace. | Confirm against the vendor’s current documentation. |
How to run a fair evaluation
- List the systems your teams search today and which of them hold restricted content
- Pick ten real questions, including some that should be answered differently for different roles
- Run the same questions through each option and record the answers and their citations
- Check what happens when the answer is not in the knowledge: does the tool say so, or guess?
- Ask to see the audit trail and the analytics for the test period
Search quality matters, but governance usually decides the final choice. A tool that finds everything but cannot prove who saw what is hard to approve.
Search, answers and knowledge ownership
Search returns documents. An assistant returns answers. A knowledge engine decides which documents deserve to be trusted in the first place, by giving each one an owner and a review step.
Without that last layer, an assistant will happily summarize an outdated policy. Ask every vendor how content gets reviewed and retired.
Effort and cost to consider
Compare more than the license. Include the effort to connect your sources, to configure permissions, to govern content over time and to answer your security team’s questions.
A cheaper option that takes months to approve may cost more than a pricier one that clears review quickly. We do not quote prices on this page, and you should ask every vendor for a scoped estimate against your own requirements.
Where a governed private platform fits
- You need to run the platform in your own cloud, VPC or on-premises
- You want a named owner and review step for every answer through a Knowledge Engine
- You need analytics on unanswered questions and knowledge gaps
- You want to control the model and retention
Frequently asked questions
What is a good alternative to Glean?
It depends on your needs. If you need private deployment, your own choice of model and governed workflows, a platform you deploy in your own infrastructure may fit.
How do I compare enterprise search tools?
Compare them on data location, permissions, citations, audit, integrations, model choice and deployment, using the same test questions for each.
Do I need a Knowledge Engine as well as search?
Search finds content. A Knowledge Engine keeps it current, owned and approved, and shows gaps. Many teams need both.
How should I test permissions?
Connect a restricted document and check that a user without access gets no answer drawn from it.
